HMS Mission Statement

"Hand Middle School will prepare every student to be a successful, contributing citizen in a global society by providing an effective and high-quality education."

Principal's Message:

Hand Middle School’s focus on the 5 A’s: Academics, Attendance, Arts, Athletics and Attitude continues during our first nine weeks.  This school year we need to add an overarching A for Accreditation.  Based on the district’s strategic plan, Hand’s improvement plan is developed through a continuous improvement cycle.  This cycle includes the development, implementation and monitoring of our plan.  To ensure that Hand Middle School is in compliance with accreditation standards, a Quality Assurance Review Team will visit Hand on November 10.  The involvement of our School Improvement Council, Parent Teacher Organization, Educational Foundation, Cluster of Churches, as well as our students and staff created a dynamic plan to accomplish ambitious goals.

Emphasizing student achievement, Hand Middle School’s goals include the following:

Performance Goal 1:  More students will score Met or Above on PASS than Not Met in ELA/Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies using established PASS baseline data.

Objective 1:   Utilize data to close achievement gaps in all content areas at Hand Middle School.

Objective 2:   Increase the rigor of courses to improve the success rate of all students meeting state and high school readiness standards.

Objective 3:   Increase academic rigor by expanding Making Middle Grades Work strategies to include all content areas.

Objective 4:  Utilize Arts in Basic Curriculum to compliment core academics.

Performance Goal 2:  To ensure that faculty and staff are knowledgeable, competent and productive.  All staff will meet highly qualified status and be evaluated annually at the appropriate level.

Objective 1:   Create a professional learning environment that supports teacher and administrator quality.

Objective 2:   Empower teachers to take active roles in committees that set high  expectations aimed at improving student academic achievement.

Objective 3:   Create a positive work environment through faculty recognitions and celebrations.

Performance Goal 3:  To create, maintain and enhance a school environment that is child-centered, safe and promotes healthy behaviors.  All stakeholders’ satisfactions levels will reach or exceed 85%.

Objective 1:   Provide students with the opportunity to strive for excellence.

Objective 2:   Analyze and monitor behavior management plans.

Objective 3:   Provide opportunities for students to participate in extra-
curricular  activities

Performance Goal 4
:  To ensure that students at Hand Middle become proficient readers.

Objective:   Increase academic rigor by expanding Making Middle Grades Work strategies to include reading.

Please review our improvement plan on the Hand Middle School website, hand.richlandone.org.  The action plans contain the strategies to accomplish each goal.  If you have additional ideas and suggestions to reach our high expectations, please let me know.

Congratulations to our hard-working volleyball team who were recognized as first runner-up in Richland District One.  Our dedicated football team is the Richland School District One Consolation Football Tournament Champions.  The volleyball and football seasons were jam-packed with excitement and filled with support and appreciation for teammates.  I admire the dedication and commitment of our players and their coaches.

Our hallways are vibrant with student writing, projects and artwork.  Please enjoy Hand as I do every day.

Thank you for allowing us to serve your child,

Marisa Vickers - mvickers@richlandone.org
